Point Reyes Sunset

Point Reyes Sunset is an original oil painting from the Point Reyes National Seashore on Mt. Vision Rd. It is one of the highest elevations in the park with one of the most spectacular views, but also the most elusive.

Looking southwest from the vantage point, views of the Pacific coast, inlets, and rugged coastal mountains are on display. At sunset, the rolling hills and treetops light up in brilliant, deep colors as the horizon fades into the skyline.

Completing a dynamic painting with these amazing views was not an easy task however. The west side of Point Reyes must be one of the foggiest places in Northern California. Even on hot summer days when there is no fog to be found, it makes its appearance on Mt. Vision Rd. I spent months visiting that region, and with every visit the hill tops along the west edge of the park were always covered in fog.

Finally in late August, I caught that elusive clear sky with its spectacular views and sunset. For just a few minutes, the sky lights up in a dazzling yellow, the hillside shines with a vivid array of warm colors, cool colors and many colors in between. It’s a memorable sight of the unique and diverse Northern California landscape.
